Severus adjusted his pink dress across his hips and gave the mirror one last glance. He knew he'd never be as pretty as the other girls, but he'd done the best he could, even tying back his limp black hair with a ribbon.

Hermione, tapping her foot impatiently, frowned when she saw him. "Severus Snape. What is the meaning of this?" She beckoned him closer. "You're late, and your frock is a filthy mess."

His face fell. "Sorry," he whispered.

She shook her head sternly. "Mommy will have to punish you."

Draping himself across her lap, he lifted his skirt.
